Course description

Coaching is a supportive, guiding conversation focused on helping students explore their thoughts and find their own solutions. This module is crucial for anyone in a mentor role who regularly has one-on-one conversations and wants to adopt a coaching approach. You will develop essential skills to actively listen, summarize, and ask meaningful questions. You will also learn how to respond to emotional students and know when and how to refer them for additional support.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the power of focused attention in coaching conversations;
  • practice core skills like listening, summarizing, and probing;
  • know how to respond effectively to emotional students;
  • be aware of your own boundaries and referral options at this university.

Target audience:

  • Teachers who’s role is also to coach students one-on-one (e.g. as a supervisor or a mentor).
  • This module is compulsory for all tutors and beginning teachers 4. It is therefore part of the DOP introductory training and the introductory didactical teacher training for tutors.
  • This module is strongly recommended for all teachers that will supervise students during their bachelor- or master thesis.

Prior knowledge: No specific prior knowledge required.

Required time investment: The module itself (3 hours). There is no preparation required for this module.

Group composition: Between 5 (minimum) and 15 (maximum) no. of participants.
