Teaching for Active Learning

For every educator (EN)

Active and engaged students achieve better results. In addition, they are more motivated than students who expect/are expected to passively absorb information with limited involvement. We recognize though, that it is not always easy to design your lessons in a way where students are playing a more active role in their own learning.

If you want to learn how to design your lessons so that they are encouraging more active participation and higher order thinking for your students, then this is the course for you. You will explore designing and implementing lessons, incorporating best practice active learning strategies with fellow teachers, have the opportunity to get and provide feedback and troubleshoot potential issues that may arise so you are prepared to deliver a successful and engaging lesson.

These sessions are in English.

Course details

During the first meeting, you learn the principles of the active learning approach, get inspired by and learn from each other and design a constructively aligned activity or lesson incorporating active learning. After this first session, you have the skills to apply the newly acquired knowledge in your own teaching practice, and will be asked to select and implement a strategy appropriate for your context.

In the second meeting, you reflect on the implementation of your chosen strategy and share your findings. You will also practice and brainstorm solutions to difficult situations that can occur when you meet resistance from students.

After the course, you will have multiple active learning strategies to choose from, be able to apply them in your own teaching practice and be better equipped to deal with student resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive a diploma or certificate upon completion of the course?

Upon completion of this course, you will not receive a diploma. After all, it is not a study programme you are completing. However, it is possible to receive a certificate of participation.

How much time am I expected to spend on this course outside of sessions?

Before the start of each course, we ask participants to fill in a form and send this to the trainer. This helps the trainer to obtain insight in to the learning goals and expectations of the participants. For participants, this a good way to prepare for asking the questions and discussing the topics that would benefit them most. This shouldn’t take longer than about 5-15 minutes.

Between sessions, the instructor will give you an assignment that offers you the opportunity to apply what you have learned. You may be asked to plan and deliver a short session for the group, give feedback to others on their session, practice a strategy in your own teaching practice and discuss your experiences.
These assignments offer you the opportunity to put what you have learned into practice. How much time you spend on an assignment is largely up to you, although a reasonable estimate would be 1-2 hours for the entire course.

At the end of the course we ask that you complete an evaluation form, and this takes about 5 minutes.
