Building your AI literacy

Building your own AI literacy is the first step toward using GenAI responsibly and confidently in your teaching. Once you have a grounded understanding of what GenAI can do, where its limits lie and how students are likely to use it, you are better prepared to make informed decisions about how GenAI is considered or included in your course design and assessment. This foundation also enables you to guide students in developing their own AI literacy in ways that strengthen learning and uphold academic integrity.

What is AI literacy?

It’s difficult to define AI literacy exhaustively, because the specific skills that determine responsible use can depend, amongst other things, on the discipline you work in. In addition to this, AI in Education is an emerging field with new developments appearing every week, and exactly which skills are necessary to effectively use GenAI in your context adjusts and shifts with the research.

However, two relevant frameworks for building your own AI literacy are seen below, one from UNESCO and one from Npuls.

UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers
  • The UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers outlines the knowledge, skills and values educators need to use AI safely and effectively in their work. It defines five dimensions: a human-centered mindset, ethics of AI, AI foundations and applications, AI pedagogy and AI for professional developmen Each dimension is described across three progression levels (Acquire, Deepen and Create).
  • Think of the UNESCO Framework as a ladder: it is designed to help educators climb step-by-step from the ground floor (basic literacy) to the roof (creative innovation). It is structured, linear, and universally applicable.

Npuls AI-GO Framework
  • The AI-GO Framework provides an evidence-informed overview of what AI literacy means in educational contexts. Based on an umbrella review of recent research and input from educators across all sectors, it describes AI literacy as the interaction of knowledge, skills, attitudes and ethical awarene
  • Think of the AI-GO Framework as a Compass: it doesn’t tell you how high to climb, but ensures you are oriented correctly by balancing your Knowledge, Skills, Ethics, and Attitude. It helps you navigate your specific terrain (context) without prescribing a single vertical path.

Informing yourself

Using any tool in education requires a thoughtful approach, and GenAI is no exception. Depending on how it is used, it can either disrupt learning or meaningfully enhance it. It is therefore essential to consider not only its benefits but also how to use it responsibly, ethically, and sustainably.

A good first step is to understand your own level of AI literacy. You can explore the AI Literacy for Teachers e-learning module, which introduces the fundamentals of Generative AI in a higher education context. To use GenAI effectively in your teaching, it helps to have a basic understanding of how these tools work and what they can do. The article What is GenAI? and this FNWI’s article on genAI roles in your course offer a concise introduction and practical examples to help inform your choices about its use.

As you build your understanding, make sure you are familiar with the ways students engage with these tools, as well as UvA and your faculty’s policies on GenAI use. Together, these elements will help you make well-grounded decisions about how to move forward.

Students' use of GenAI

Students often use GenAI in ways that are not visible to lecturer, making it important to understand common patterns of student use as part of your own AI literacy. Students may turn to GenAI when they are unsure how to start an assignment, want quick feedback, feel time pressure, or lack confidence in their understanding. Their level of skill and critical awareness varies widely, and some students may overtrust AI outputs or overlook their limitations.

Some ways in which students use AI support learning when used intentionally, while others can unintentionally bypass essential learning steps and make it harder to assess students’ understanding. There are also equity considerations, as not all students have access to the same tools or features. Because AI detection tools are unreliable, addressing these challenges requires thoughtful course and assessment design rather than policing. Making thinking visible through in-class activities, process-based tasks, and clear guidance on responsible use helps students develop the skills they are expected to learn. Understanding how students typically use GenAI allows teachers to set clearer expectations and design learning activities that reduce unproductive reliance on AI.

Restrictions on GenAI use within UvA's Policies

The goal of GenAI in education is to support human critical thinking and creativity, not to replace it. When used responsibly, GenAI can enhance learning and strengthen the relationship between teachers and students. Below are some of the key restrictions and extended guidelines that should be adhered to for safe and responsible integration of GenAI into education.

Do not enter sensitive student data into commercial AI tools

Data protection

  • Teachers must not enter sensitive student data into GenAI prompts with commercial AI tools since it’s unclear how this data may be stored or used (GDPR). Teachers can safely use fictional or anonymized examples instead.
  • UvA AI Chat provides a safe AI platform where data cannot be accessed by third parties. The main restriction here is the processing of Special Category Data (sensitive personal data, bijzondere categorieën persoonsgegevens), such as health data or personal data related to political beliefs, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
When requiring GenAI use, students must use UvA AI Chat

Assignments

  • Teachers who require the use of GenAI in class tasks or assessments must instruct students to use UvA AI Chat, the only tool officially approved by the UvA. Requiring that students use commercial AI products (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) is not allowed because of unclear data handling according to the UvA policy.
  • Teachers must not require the use of GenAI to complete assessments of a course without consulting the course management (UvA).
  • GenAI shouldn’t be used for every assignment in a course. A balance between in-class and take-home work is recommended. Check your faculty’s policy for details on what is approved.
Teachers must not grade students' work using GenAI

Grading assessments

Teachers must not grade students’ work by using GenAI. Using GenAI to assess students’ formative or summative assignments is not allowed (UvA Policy framework and guidelines on GenAI in education).

All GenAI-generated content must be labeled as such

AI-generated content

  • Teachers must label all GenAI content, such as text, photos, diagrams, and PowerPoints as “AI-generated”. This measure helps students to become more aware of AI-generated content and fake information (EU AI Act).
  • Teachers must not use GenAI output without verifying its credibility. Generated results are not reliable scientific sources and must always be critically checked elsewhere.
Do not rely on AI-detection tools (they are not reliable)

Plagiarism

  • Teachers must not count on AI-detection tools to check students’ work for fraud or plagiarism, because the existing software is not reliable enough. Refer to the UvA assessment policy for more information about plagiarism.
  • Consult your faculty’s Examination Board’s Rules and Regulations for more information about your context.
