Visible Learning Trajectories Programme AI track

AI literacy at the curriculum level

Generative AI (GenAI) rapidly transforms higher education, creating both opportunities and challenges. We must adapt to this evolving landscape by integrating AI into teaching and learning practices while maintaining core academic values.

The Visible Learning Trajectories Programme supports degree programmes in systematically designing an AI learning trajectory or learning trajectory objective, tailored to their needs, and co-created with the teaching team and specialised trainers. We focus not only on the integration of students’ AI literacy in curricula but also on teacher development. This ensures that both students and teachers are prepared, within the context of their programme, for a future where AI plays a crucial role.

Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes that have participated in the Visible Learning Trajectories Programme and want to equip students with AI literacy at the curriculum level can now sign up for the AI track of the Visible Learning Trajectories Programme.

What does the AI track entail?

We focus on designing a learning trajectory to enhance students’ AI literacy while leveraging AI to optimise the learning process. This is achieved by integrating AI into the curriculum responsibly, meaningfully and systematically. This integration occurs not only at the course level but also at the programme level.

Our specialised trainer duo – consisting of a Visible Learning Trajectories trainer with didactic expertise and a staff member from a faculty TLC with AI expertise – works in co-creation with the teacher team to  develop a learning trajectory that meets the needs of both students and teachers. Using the learning trajectory methodology, we design clear learning objectives, effective learning activities, and targeted assessment. The emphasis is on enhancing students’ AI literacy, improving the learning process, and the professional development of teachers.

We provide expert guidance in developing teaching and assessment methods that align with the intended learning outcomes. The result is a tailored learning trajectory that integrates AI into education at the programme level, enriching students’ learning experiences with AI technology.

Structural approach in four phases

Designing and implementing an AI learning trajectory follows a structured four-phase approach, carried out over a period of two to three months:

  • Start meeting with the programme director to determine requirements, participating courses and teachers, and start date
  • Plenary kick-off meeting with the teaching team in which a blueprint is drawn up
  • Teachers work together in small teams for two to three months to develop the blueprint and implementation at the course level, with guidance from the trainer duo
  • Final plenary meeting for curriculum-level integration

AI as a means and an end, both for students and teachers

The design of an AI learning trajectory is structured around four quadrants (Figure 1), facilitating the consideration of four distinct perspectives in its development. Within this framework, AI can function both as a means and as an end, serving the needs of both students and educators.

AI literacy enables students to understand, apply, and critically assess AI, including crafting prompts, recognising limitations, explaining societal and environmental implications and evaluating AI-generated output critically. By fostering critical thinking and integrity, students learn to use AI responsibly across contexts. AI serves as a versatile tool to enhance learning, acting as a mentor, editor, or research assistant to support learning through personalised feedback, refining critical thinking, and streamlining tasks.

Teachers can explore AI applications relevant to their field. They identify examples and explain their significance for the learning process and learn to incorporate AI into the curriculum responsibly. This equips them with practical AI literacy skills to innovate and adapt in the context of the degree programme.
