The University of Amsterdam aims to offer high-quality education to all students. The UvA Teaching & Learning Centres (TLC) provide support to lecturers in the professional development needed to meet this aim. TLC offers educational expertise and guidance so that lecturers can develop further, in line with their prior knowledge and interests. Central to what we offer is that all lecturers at the UvA can get the best out of their teaching. This involves more than didactics: developing an investigative attitude towards one’s own teaching skills is also important. In this way, lecturers can continue to improve their skills, based on evidence based, educational insights.
Teachers can develop educational expertise at different levels. The basis for every lecturer is obtaining their UTQ (University Teaching Qualification), aimed at lesson and course level. Depending on your interest, position and capabilities, after the UTQ you can choose to further enhance your skillset within the same level or develop at another level, e.g. programme or faculty.
UvA Teaching & Learning Centers also support the ongoing (further) development of courses through various programs. Read more about programmes on curriculum level.
At all levels, you can choose the focus with which you want to develop, which may change during your career.
Educational Research
As a teacher, would you like to contribute to new knowledge by doing your own research in your teaching? Then you can apply to take part in the Research Fellowship programme in which you will be supervised in conducting educational research.
Educational Leadership
Do you have the ambition to fulfil a leadership role, for example as a programme director or education director? If so, you will first follow the STQ and after the Educational Leadership Course (LOL).
Supporting fellow teachers
Or do you want to support colleagues as a coach or trainer? You can facilitate peer consultation sessions with your colleagues. It is also possible within the UTQ and STQ, and the Visible Learning Trajectories programme in which teaching teams are trained to ensure the coherence and structure of their programme curriculum.
Excellent teaching
Want to develop further and become an even better teacher? Then you can follow short courses and workshops on a specific topic, for example Feedback, HOT moments, Gen AI or Storytelling. Or choose the track Assessment or Mastery in Course Design, in which you really go into depth in several meetings.
TLC in faculty offers courses and workshops specifically for lecturers within the faculty. See what workshops and tracks are available for each faculty:
