BKO+ Track – Responsible AI in Education

Generative AI is rapidly changing higher education, raising important questions about learning, assessment, academic integrity, and the role of the teacher. This BKO+ Track offers educators the opportunity to explore these developments in a critical, practical, and collaborative way.
Working from your own teaching context, you investigate how to make informed and pedagogically grounded decisions about AI in education, while connecting with colleagues facing similar challenges across disciplines.

Track details

The BKO+ Track Responsible AI in Education is for university teachers who want to critically engage with the impact of generative AI on higher education. Participants explore how AI affects learning, assessment, critical thinking, academic writing, and self-regulated learning, while redesigning part of their own course in response to an AI-related educational dilemma. Through collaborative activities and AI Teaching Labs, educators develop practical, pedagogically grounded approaches that can be directly applied within their own teaching context.

Intended learning outcome

By the end of this BKO+ Track, you will be able to

  • Analyse and critically evaluate the opportunities, limitations, and risks of generative AI in relation to learning, assessment, teaching practices, academic integrity, and disciplinary practices within higher education.
  • Design or redesign course components that address AI-related educational dilemmas using principles of constructive alignment and pedagogically grounded approaches to support responsible and meaningful AI use in teaching and assessment.
  • Experiment with and reflect on AI-supported educational interventions through iterative design, peer feedback, evaluation, and justification of educational design choices using relevant literature, evidence, and scholarship on AI in education

Good to know

Target audience Educators who have completed their University Teacher Qualification (UTQ, BKO in Dutch) and aspire to take their didactic knowledge further by integrating and considering AI and its potential misuse/responsible use within their course. All educators are welcome, from teachers to course coordinators!
Time investment 80 hours (21 contact hours, 31 hours self-study, 28 hours workplace learning)

Addendum After successfully completing the track, you will receive a UvA addendum to your UTQ (BKO) certificate.

Assessment

The assessment process for this BKO+ Track will involve teachers redesigning an element of a course whereby AI for enhanced teaching effectiveness and student learning (aligning with UTQ/BKO competencies) will be integrated or considered in the design. They will present their redesign, detailing how AI inclusion supports UTQ (BKO) competencies and improve educational outcomes, while also addressing potential AI misuse by implementing strategies for AI-resilient assessments and practices. Reflecting on the redesign, teachers will assess the impact of AI elements on their teaching practices and student engagement.
