With Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), teachers in higher education systematically examine their own teaching practice. The objective of the Special Interest Group (SIG) SoTL is to connect teachers interested in researching their teaching. Here, we effectively support each other in setting up and conducting educational research – through exchanging experiences, inspiring each other, and encouraging mutual collaborations.
SoTL refers to the concept that teachers conduct systematic research into their own educational practices. The objective is: to improve both teaching and learning and to share insights with the academic community. A characteristic of SoTL is that the research is conducted by teachers themselves and not by external educational scientists. Besides, SoTL is a research-based approach to educational improvement, which extends beyond critical reflection. Teachers go through the entire research cycle (including data collection, data analysis and dissemination). Finally, SoTL is about sharing results. By doing so, teachers not only improve their own education but also enrich the existing knowledge about education. For instance, insights from SoTL research can serve as a basis for new research and as inspiration for other teachers.
The SIG SoTL is currently in the startup phase and, in the near future, will organise panel discussions, workshops and informal knowledge-sharing sessions. It also provides a platform to meet like-minded people. Meetings organised as part of this SIG are open to anyone with a passion for education, and for educational research in particular. Experience in educational research is not a requirement.

Svenne Groeneweg is researcher at TLC Central and coaches teachers in their SoTL practice.
A Special Interest Group (SIG) is a group for teachers with shared interests and expertise within a particular theme. In a SIG, participants come together to exchange, develop and apply knowledge and experience. Essentially, a SIG focuses on expertise and networking around a specific theme. Themes teachers care about and are relevant to the quality of academic education at the UvA. With the SIGs, we transcend faculty boundaries and enable teachers from all faculties to meet each other.
