Get everyone on board with active learning
Active learning works best when everyone involved feels included and confident; you as a lecturer, co-lecturers or TAs that teach in your course, and last, but definitely not least, the students.
On these pages you find advice and strategies how to get everyone on board.
First, get yourself on board by reflecting on your teaching style, concerns or insecurities, and selecting active‑learning strategies that fit your strengths and personality. Or, do this together with co-lecturers in your course, or other peers.
If you’re not teaching your course alone, preferably include co-lecturers in course analysis and (de)design from the start.
Next, bring your TAs up to speed for your new design, by giving them clear instructions, asking for their input, and defining a supportive role that leverages their expertise. Or, include them in building new plans from the start.
Last but not least, engage and include your students by showing how their feedback validates the design, fostering an open attitude, and highlighting the relevance of the activities for their learning.
