    Professional development in teaching

High quality university teaching requires a well-designed curriculum as well as uptodate educational expertise.

By investing in your professional development in teaching, you:

    • keep your knowledge and skills up to date
    • respond to educational developments and changing requirements
    • work on active learning and a stimulating learning environment
    • contribute directly to consistently high educational quality for our students

The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) supports you in this with educational expertise, guidance, and a broad range of learning activities and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

    Personal development paths

Whether you are just starting out in teaching or are responsible for an entire degree programme: at every level there is a suitable range of activities that aligns with your development path. The EB Educational Professional Development plan describes the development opportunities for each academic position. The foundation for everyone is obtaining the Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO, University Teaching Qualification (UTQ)). Within your level you can further deepen your expertise or (continue to) develop yourself at another level, in line with your role, experience, and ambitions.

Excellent teaching – courses, workshops and programmes

Looking to develop further as a teacher? You can choose from short courses and workshops, or a BKO+ Track or programme that focuses on in-depth development.

    Educational leadership

Interested in taking on a leadership role in education? You can start with the Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO/STQ), followed by the Education Leadership Programme (LOL/ELP). Together, these programmes help you develop an educational vision, shape and steer curricula and guide and inspire teaching teams.

    Mastering my PhD

The Mastering my PhD programme supports you as a PhD candidate at EB in successfully completing your PhD trajectory within four years. You build your academic and teaching skills, reflect on challenges during your PhD, and receive support in finding a healthy work-life balance. Taking part in the programme as a fixed cohort provides additional support throughout your PhD trajectory.

This programme is compulsory for all PhD candidates at EB and is concluded with a certificate of participation. You will receive an invitation at the start of your PhD.

Professional development for UD, UHD, HL

Are you a assistant professor (UD), associate professor (UHD) or professor (HL) and have you obtained the Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO, University Teaching Qualification (UTQ))? Then, at UvA Economics and Business (EB), you invest at least 8 hours per year in your professional development within 6 core themes that are essential to EB’s educational vision. For this, you can choose from various modules, workshops and activities that match your role and interests.

Coach or trainer for colleagues – facilitating peer consultation sessions

As a coach or trainer, you can support colleagues by facilitating peer consultation sessions with them. This can also take place within the BKO, SKO and the Zichtbare Leerlijnen Programma (ZLP, Visible Learning Trajectories Programme), which improves the structure and coherence of the curriculum.

    Conducting educational research

If you would like to conduct research into your own teaching, you can apply for the Educational Research Fellowship programme.

    E-learnings

Would you like to develop your knowledge further in your own time? You can follow e-learning modules to explore specific themes in more depth or to refresh basic principles.

Further developing the curriculum of an entire degree programme

Study programmes are constantly evolving. For example to better reflect professional practice or to be better prepared for the future. Together, within the programme, you can continue to develop the curriculum, for example, by analysing the structure and coherence of the curriculum, or by delving into a specific educational theme.
