How does the Faculty of Science spend its quality money on education?
With the transition from the grant to the loan system, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) released so-called quality funds for universities. The universities use these funds to increase the quality of education. At the Faculty of Science the following themes have been chosen:
More time and attention for students
The Faculty of Science programmes pay a lot of attention to small-scale education and to keep this possible, a lot of effort is needed from lecturers. It has therefore been decided to use the quality money for personnel costs to hire lecturers and researchers with an increased teaching commitment so that we can offer more time and attention to students. Applications for this will not be considered on an ongoing basis but during rounds announced to the teaching and research organization.
Better preparation for profession/career
After completing their master’s, students go into research or seek employment in the work field. To better help them with career orientation and development, modules of 1.5 EC are developed that focus on professional skills. Examples are career orientation (Explore Your Options), project management and data visualization and Entrepreneurship.
Community building
The Bèta Break is the discussion platform of the Faculty of Science where topics on the intersection of Science and Society are discussed monthly. The quality funds are used to support the team of students who voluntarily organize these lectures and discussions. The Science Park Activities Committee (SPACIE) includes board members of the various study associations who jointly organise a monthly activity for all students at the Faculty of Science, with a special focus on the inclusion of international students. Examples are a comedy night, barista workshop and a band night.
Teacher professionalisation
It is important that education is not only of a high level in terms of content, but that it is also inspiring. Fortunately, with the help of the quality funds we could establish the Teaching and Learning Centre: a platform, information source and course center for lecturers where attention is paid to educational innovation and lecturer professionalisation.
