Lighting Up Education: Lightboard Experience by Jop Schouten

Inspirational video | Lighting up education: Lightboard experience by Jop Schouten

Ready to light up your lessons? Jop Schouten, lecturer in the Bachelor’s programmes Econometrics and Data Science and Economics, shares his experience of using a lightboard in knowledge clips.

A lightboard allows simultaneous speaking and writing, making it ideal for demonstrating mathematical concepts, as well as for other situations where you want to work out an example or exercise. The benefits include reduced preparation time and a more engaging lecture experience for students, who learn a small amount of new material before class.

Wondering how he does it? Jop walks you through the benefits and gives you advice on how to use a lightboard. Among other things: Keep text minimal, practice writing at a distance from the camera, start with small chunks of content.

Knowledge clips help you to delve more deeply into in-class material

Knowledge clips can help students by introducing a small amount of new material prior to class, thereby supporting their learning. This allows you to reallocate valuable in-class time for delving more deeply into the material.

More information on knowledge clips

These clips are short videos and can be instructional or be used as a tool to provide students with exercises. Either type of video can be made more active by designing opportunities for students to think about what they are watching.

How to use knowledge clips for Active Learning?

  • Build: Have students watch a short informational video on the topic to activate their prior knowledge.
  • Act: Have students answer questions based on the video. These questions can be embedded within the video (using Feedback Fruits or Kaltura) or listed separately, such as in Wooclap or a Canvas quiz.
  • Assess: Ask students to write a paragraph on how they think the video allowed them to explore the topic in ways that they otherwise could not.
