Guiding discussions

For every educator (EN)
In academic education, a discussion is an important way to learn from each other. By engaging in a discussion, students gain new insights and learn that a topic has multiple sides to it.

But how can you get students to actively participate in a group discussion? In this course, you experiment with different working methods to stimulate discussions and you practice giving instructions. You will also gain insight into the way you communicate when students are engaged in a discussion.

Course details

In this meeting, you will mainly practice your skills by moderating discussions between colleagues. We do this by means of various activating work forms. You give each other feedback on the way you give instructions and communicate. The purpose of this course is that you will be able to use your course design and way of communicating to stimulate students to actively participate in discussions.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive a diploma or certificate upon completion of the course?

Upon completion of this course, you will not receive a diploma. After all, it is not a study programme you are completing. However, it is possible to receive a certificate of participation.

How much time am I expected to spend on this course outside of sessions?

Before the start of each course, we ask participants to fill in a form and send this to the trainer. This helps the trainer to obtain insight in to the learning goals and expectations of the participants. For participants, this a good way to prepare for asking the questions and discussing the topics that would benefit them most.

In addition, the majority of courses invite participants to bring in materials (such as a case study), or to prepare for sessions by watching/reading some online self-study materials. For a complete course, the total preparation time will be approximately 1 hour.
