Improving Assessment Quality in Seven Stages

In this track you will learn how to improve assessment quality by following the seven stages of the assessment cycle. Together with fellow lecturers and TLC assessment specialists, you will reflect on the setup and quality of the assessment in your own course, as well as your role and competency in the various stages of the assessment cycle. As a group, you will work on a joint assessment-related project and function as a learning network (for colleagues) on the topic of assessment both during and after the track.

By the end of this track, you will understand how to determine assessment quality and which policies and regulations determine how students can be assessed within the University of Amsterdam. You will also compile and implement suggestions to improve your own assessment.

Course details

The track consists of five interactive workshops led by TLC assessment specialists, self-study (literature and assignments) and workplace learning, in which you will investigate the relevant policy and context in your own programme or faculty, work on your own assessment and consult colleagues for input and feedback.

At the end of the track, you will outline and discuss your suggestions for improving your own assessment in a final presentation.

Following the seven stages of the assessment cycle, you will explore questions such as:

  • What is the best way to assess your learning outcomes – what other formats are available besides traditional exams and papers?
  • How does your assessment design fit within the policy and regulations of your programme and/or faculty?
  • How can you ensure your assessment covers what you actually teach in your course?
  • How can you ensure team-grading is consistent and efficient?
  • How do you analyze exam results, and how can you use this information to improve assessment quality, both short-term and long-term?

Good to know

Target audience UvA lecturers with UTQ (BKO), involved in assessment design and/or responsible for assessment quality (i.e. examinators, course coordinators, member of Examinations Board, Assessment committee). Lecturers need permission from their manager (please also see Cost’).
Time investment 80 hours (sessions, preparation and workplace learning)
Group composition Between 4 (minimum) and 12 (maximum) participants
Dates Sessions (1:30 – 4:30 PM): 24 September 2024, 19 November 2024, 14 January 2025, 4 March 2025, 15 April 2025
Closing sessions with presentations (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM): 13 & 20 May 2025
Language Dutch. English is an option, please inform well in advance.
Cost €1425, to be payed by faculty. Lecturers need explicit permission from their manager to participate.
Registration Registration will be possible from 30 May.

What do you gain from this track?

At the end of this track, you will be able to:

  • Follow the seven stages of the assessment cycle to improve assessment quality;
  • Embed choices relating to assessment design within the relevant organizational and policy frameworks and literature on assessment quality;
  • Evaluate your own assessment and suggest, select and implement points for improvement;
  • Critically reflect on this process as well as your own role and professional development;
  • Work together with fellow participants to solve complex problems relating to assessment.
