24 hrs Education Design Retreat
As a UvA lecturer, do you have ideas to renew your teaching*, but can’t work it out due to the demands of your day to day schedule? During this retreat, you can renew your teaching at an external location for 24 hours, with colleagues from different faculties and trainer from the TLC network as sparring partners. The programme aims to innovate the design of your teaching.
* Teaching in this context regards to a subject or a (part of the) curriculum, such as a minor. It is important here that the participating lecturers have a mandate to adapt their teaching and hold or are in the process of obtaining a UTQ (BKO) certificate. The retreat will be based on the UTQ competencies.

| Preparation | You will fill in an intake form in advance. Based on this form, an intake interview with one of the trainers will take place to ensure 1) you can start the retreat focused and 2) during the retreat your learning and development needs are addressed. | |

About the programme
The programme consists of three phases.
| First phase – Analysis and your design question
Thursday afternoon is devoted to analysing your specific educational situation and focusing on your design question. You will formulate your wish for improvement and think about which solution fits. You will take into account the target group, learning goals and contextual factors. |
Second phase – Design
Thursday evening and Friday morning, is devoted to design. During this phase, you work on a concept structure of your education. You then devise concrete educational activities. |
Third phase – Implementation
You make a plan of how you will actually implement the improvements. You make concrete what needs to happen after this retreat to realise your design. |
Coaching by TLC trainers
During the retreat, experienced TLC trainers will offer you tools and working methods needed to transform your ideas into a structure that meets relevant design principles. We also provide opportunities to give and receive feedback and inspiration with your colleagues that is supportive and provides a source of innovation and inspiration. You will leave the session with a new educational design that can be implemented in your teaching practice.
On location
For this session, the network of UvA Teaching & Learning Centres welcomes you to a beautiful location in Castricum (Noord Holland), where you will leave your daily practice behind for 24 hours to focus on (re)designing your education. We take care of the programme of activities, an overnight stay, and food and drinks; you make sure that after these 24 hours you have gained inspiration and have created a revitalised educational design.
What do you obtain from this retreat?
After the 24 hour sessions you have:
- Identified and analysed what problem you want to solve;
- Designed a new structure for your chosen education;
- Designed teaching and learning activities that fit the learning objectives and assessment of your education;
- Developed a clear roadmap for the implementation of the designed education.
