Zoom is an online video calling service that allows you to easily connect remotely with colleagues, faculty and students from inside and outside the UvA. You can meet, chat, share your screen and ask poll questions.

With this tool, as a teacher, I can:

  • create Zoom links for lectures and meetings from a course in Canvas;
  • share my screen and audio during a meeting;
  • play audio or video during meetings;
  • use breakout and waiting rooms;
  • set up that logging in with UvANetID is a requirement for meeting access;
  • Allow external participants to participate by not setting the UvANetID login as a requirement;
  • record meetings (after receiving permission from participants).

Why should I use this tool?
  • With this tool you can organize an online session, for example if it is not possible for you, students or a guest speaker to meet on location.
  • You can deliberately organize certain contact moments digitally; a digital consultation hour is more accessible for students to visit than a consultation hour on location.
What is this tool less suitable for?
  • The standard version of Zoom is not suitable for meetings with more than 250 people. If you are interested in this please contact fb-zoom-icts@uva.nl.
  • The tool is not a suitable platform for facilitating collaboration between students. If you want to create a place for students to collaborate outside of lectures (asynchronously) you would be better off setting up a Microsoft Teams channel.
When does this tool work best?
  • Set clear expectations towards your students for meetings via Zoom, this prevents unwanted behavior and frustration1. For example, consider expectations around the following questions:
    • Do you think students should turn on their camera? What agreements do you make with the students about this?
    • How do students ask a question? Do they raise their hand via “emotions” or do they post their question in the chat?
    • To what extent are students allowed to use the chat during the meetings? It can create a lot of noise if students are actively chatting while participating in a lecture.
    • Do you record the online meetings? How does this affect the atmosphere during the meeting?
