Utilising ‘HOT moments’ as moments of learning

HOT is an abbreviation of ‘Heated, Offensive and Tense’.

Does your course include topics with controversial themes that generate heated discussions? Can students say anything they want in class? What if other students are hurt by these statements? Can this happen in a safe learning environment? How can you facilitate these discussions, and does it affect your safety as a teacher? This workshop delves into different perspectives on dealing with HOT moments.

Course details

In this workshop we delve into different perspectives on dealing with HOT moments. A HOT moment is a Heated, Offensive and Tense moment in class.
The opinion of a student clashes with the integrity of another student resulting in an uncomfortable and unsafe feeling for both students and teachers. This can happen in discussions about sensitive topics, but also as a consequence of group dynamics.

Hot moments can derail teaching, but at the same time have a great potential for learning.

Hence, this workshop will create possibilities to experiment with different behavioral approaches in the occurrence of a HOT moment. We intend to create real situations in which you can safely try out and review different behaviors.

Your learning can take place in testing new behaviors, verifying your own behaviors and observing others.

Intended learning outcome

  • To recognise the role of tension in hot moments
  • Appreciate different ways of responding to a hot moment
  • Creating a safe and challenging learning environment in order to use hot moments as learning opportunities.
