Tailoring supervision

This module focuses on one-on-one supervision of students, for example in the form of mentorship, internship supervision, or supervising theses. Teachers will play out cases with a training actor to practice with common situations regarding supervision.

Note: This training builds on the year 1 Structuring supervision training where you learned guidelines for structuring a supervision conversation and practice a supervision conversation in a roleplay with colleagues. In Tailoring supervision, you dive into the literature of adaptive supervising strategies and apply it with roleplay with an educational roleplay actor.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module participants can…

employ different styles of supervision, depending on the needs of the student
have an interest in, respect and appreciate the individual student’s input
refer students appropriately in the event of problems or stagnation
strike the right balance between being a supervisor and an assessor

Time investment		2 hours in class + 1 hour preparation time + 2 hours portfolio (for teachers in Workgroup Teacher Programme)

Adaptive research supervision: Exploring expert thesis supervisors’ practical knowledge. Higher Education Research & Development, 34(1), 117–130. Write down a one-on-one (supervising) situation with a student that you have encountered in which you were struggling what to do/say. Deduce what adaptive supervision style you can deploy with the characteristics of your student.

After the training for UTQ/BKO portfolio: a STARRT-reflection of a supervising case and evaluation form filled out by 2 students.
