Self-regulated Learning (SRL/SL) has become increasingly critical as the rapidly evolving job market demands professionals who are independent, adaptable, and proactive in their learning.
“SL is ―an active, constructive process whereby learners set goals for their learning and then attempt to monitor, regulate, and control their cognition, motivation, and behavior, guided and constrained by their goals and the contextual features in the environment.” (Pintrich, 2000b, p. 453).
While teachers often assume that students are naturally equipped to regulate their learning, the reality is many lack essential SRL skills. This gap manifests as difficulties in planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning activities. Students need to master these skills—not only to achieve academic goals but to thrive as lifelong learners in an increasingly complex world.
For teachers in higher education, fostering SRL is no longer a supplementary goal but a cornerstone of academic success and career readiness. Recognising this, the TLC-FMG is taking steps to address the gap in SRL skills.
In January, March, and May, we will host three interactive sessions each focussing on a different aspect of SRL to deepen the teaching community’s understanding, with an emphasis on practical strategies to guide students in learning how to learn.

Introduction to Self Regulated Learning
The lunch seminar hosted on January 28th, 2025, aimed to provide teachers with a foundational understanding of SRL, highlight the importance of helping students develop self-regulation skills, and introduce three practical strategies that teachers can immediately implement in their own teaching.
Strategies for goal setting and planning
Ever wonder what the role of goal setting and planning is in fostering student motivation and academic success? This recap of the TLC FMG Lunch Seminar on March 25, 2025, delves into the seminar’s key insights and provides practical strategies that teachers can implement to support their students in becoming more self-regulated learners.
Task strategies and reflection
On 27 May 2025, the TLC FMG hosted its third lunch seminar in the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) series. Brigitte ten Brink and Fam te Poel guided participants through the key question: How can we help students take control of their own learning process?
Event: Supporting Students’ Self-Regulated Learning
Are you looking for tools on how to support your students’ Self-Regulated Learning? Join us on Tuesday, 1 July 2025, from 15:30 to 17:00 with drinks afterwards at REC JK ‘The Floor’ for TLC-FMG’s exciting summer event.
How can we support students in becoming more self-regulated learners?
This is the central question explored in the new five-part podcast series SELFLEX SESSIES created by Brigitte ten Brink (lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, affiliated with TLC-FMG) and Sjirk Zijlstra (education expert at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). Developed within SELFLEX, a research consortium funded by the Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO), the series features insightful interviews with experts from both academic and professional fields.
Check out all available episodes on Spotify! While the podcasts are recorded in Dutch, we have English summaries available below to make the content accessible to non-Dutch speakers.
