Pre-BKO
FNWI
How do you create a learning environment where students feel motivated to learn? What can you do as a teacher and what does the literature say about this?
Course description
Key module
As a teacher, creating a learning environment in which everyone can thrive is one of the most important tasks. This means that you have to create an environment where physical, social and intellectual safety is guarded. But how do you do this and what is your influence as a teacher? In this module, we will discuss what the elements are of the self-determination theory and how to translate this to your educational practice.
Beginning teachers who have little or no didactic prior knowledge.
This module is compulsory for all teaching-assistants (student-assistants, tutors and PhD students) and teachers 4. It is therefore part of the DOP introductory training and the introductory didactical teacher training for TA’s.
This module (together with modules 1, 2, 5 and 6) is strongly recommended for all teachers (a.o. teachers 4 and PhDs) that will supervise students during their bachelor- or master thesis.
All key and enriching modules are open for everyone who is teaching at the Faculty of Science, e.g. teachers 4, tutors and teaching assistants (PhD’s and student assistants). Not sure which module suits your learning objectives best? Please send an email to tlc-training-science@uva.nl.
Prior knowledge: During this module we will refer to the theory of Tuckman on group dynamics. You are expected to know it on a conceptual level (not in detail), therefore it is added as preparation. You can of course skip this if you are already known with the theory.
Required time investment: Approximately one hour preparation time plus the module itself (3 hours).
