Conflict management

As a teacher, you can encounter conflicts with both students and colleagues. This module focuses on how to best manage these conflicts. Teachers will reflect on the conflict style they usually use and will analyse conflict situations they have encountered before to learn from these for future situations.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this module participants can…

  • define conflict.
  • discuss the difference between task-oriented and social-emotional conflict based.
  • recognize their personal (and other ones) ways of managing conflicts
  • recognize the different approaches to conflict and how they all are applicable in the same situation
  • analyse their own situations of conflict based on psychological theories
  • demonstrate the conflict (de)escalation process
Preparation

Make sure to prepare the following (otherwise you unfortunately won’t be able to participate in the training):

  • Complete The Dutch Test for Conflict Handling (DUTCH) yourself (Dutch and English version). Bring a copy
  • Ask someone else to complete The Dutch Test for Conflict Handling (DUTCH) about yourself, choose someone you know well (preferably in the work environment). If you like, you can also have several others complete the questionnaire. Bring a copy/copies
  • Complete the Conflict Situation Questionnaire (English)/ Conflictsituatievragenlijst (Dutch) yourself (Prein, 2007). And bring a copy.
  • Read: De Dreu (2005) Chapters 1&2
