Conflict management

As a teacher, you can encounter conflicts with both students and colleagues. This training focuses on how to best manage these conflicts. You will reflect on your usual conflict management style and analyse past conflict situations to learn from them and apply those insights to future scenarios.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training you will be able to…

define conflict
discuss the difference between task-oriented and social-emotional conflict based
recognize their personal (and other ones) ways of managing conflicts
recognize the different approaches to conflict and how they all are applicable in the same situation
analyse their own situations of conflict based on psychological theories
demonstrate the conflict (de)escalation process

Time investment		3.5 hours in class + 1 hour preparation time + 2 hours portfolio (for teachers in Workgroup Teacher Programme)
Preparation and materials		Make sure to prepare the following (otherwise you unfortunately won’t be able to participate in the training): The Dutch Test for Conflict Handling (DUTCH): Complete the test yourself and bring a copy. Ask at least one colleague (or more for a broader perspective) to complete the test about you. Average the scores and bring the completed questionnaires with you. Conflict Situation Questionnaire / Conflictsituatievragenlijst (Prein, 2007): Complete this questionnaire and bring a copy to the training. Reading: Read Chapter 13 of De Dreu, C.K.W. (2010).
