Comenius-extension Visible Learning Trajectories Tool Psychobiology: towards a self-regulated student

Stimulating self-regulation by using feedback on personal study results to concrete follow-up steps.

Aims

The Comenius extension of the Visible Learning Trajectories tool aims to generate feedback based on personal study results, which students then convert into concrete follow-up steps during feedforward dialogues.

The Visible Learning Trajectories tool integrates students’ personal study results with the structure and coherence of learning trajectories. This allows large numbers of students to receive continuous targeted feedback, independent of teacher capacity, time and place, on all phases of the feedback cycle:

  1. Feed‐up (Where am I going?): the Visible Learning Trajectories tool gives students insight into the structure and coherence of learning trajectories and into the learning objectives to be achieved. See the Visible Learning Trajectories Project page.
  2. Feedback (Where am I now?): the Comenius extension generates targeted feedback based on personal study results (score on exam questions and rubrics). In addition to information on whether a course has been passed, students now receive feedback on their competences on specific learning objectives.
  3. Feed‐forward (What steps do I still need to take?): During feedforward dialogues with their mentor, students use insights from the feedback phase to discuss their strengths, the desired steps to take and what is needed to take these steps.

Continuously going through this feedback cycle closes the gap between where students are, where they want to go and how they get there.
