GenAI and Assessment 1 – Understanding the Impact
The introduction of multiple accessible and powerful Generative AI (GenAI) tools has raised many questions about the assessment regimes of educational institutions everywhere. This shift is causing educators to urgently examine their assessments, but many questions remain – what needs changing, and why? This workshop delves into the capacity of GenAI and how unsupervised assessments are impacted.
This is part 1 of a two-part assessment workshop series. You are welcome to attend either or both sessions. GenAI and Assessment (Part 2): Designing Better Assessments focuses on redesigning your assessment once you have identified which elements you want to keep, adapt or replace, which is covered in part 1.
Course details
In this interactive workshop, you will explore how Generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping assessment in higher education and what that means for your own courses. We will look at how GenAI affects unsupervised assessments such as take-home exams, essays and projects, discuss what responsible and problematic use of GenAI looks like in your context, and work with colleagues from other faculties to test how “AI-resilient” one of your current assessments really is. Along the way, you will be invited to reconsider what you most need and want students to demonstrate in their work.
Intended learning outcome
- Describe some of the different ways students can use GenAI in the completion of assessments, and their impact on learning and academic integrity.
- Describe the requirements and learning process of your assessment and the ways GenAI can impact this process.
- Select viable adjustments to your assessment and begin the editing process.
