    Online education at the UvA

The COVID-19 pandemic meant that higher education had to shift to forms of online education in a hurry. In order to learn from the experiences of faculty and students during this time, the Board of Trustees funded the project ‘Online education’.

This project consist of several studies aimed at gaining insights into (online) teaching strategies that can be effective for different types of learning objectives and target groups. These insights will make an important contribution to the further formation and improvement of the UvA’s digitization vision.

The results of several studies about online education can be found below. During these studies, the experiences of teachers and students were also elaborated in multiple great practical examples. These so-called teacher stories can be found at the bottom of this page.

    Reseach on online education

Online eduation at the University of Amsterdam: practices and experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic (period: 2020-2021)

Team members: Monique Meij, Chevy van Dorresteijn, Natalie Pareja Roblin, Frank Cornelissen, Joke Voogt & Monique Volman

    Study 1: Literature Review

In the fall of 2020, a systematic literature review was conducted on course factors, student factors, instructor factors, and institutional factors that contribute to effective online and blended education. Instructors and policy makers can use the insights from this study when designing and implementing online or blended courses.

    Study 2: Questionnaire Survey

A questionnaire was administered to UvA instructors at the end of 2020 asking about the (online) teaching strategies they used in the design and delivery of their online courses. The results of this study will provide more insight into the various strategies used, with what purpose(s) and in what setting (e.g., faculty and group size).

    Study 3: Focus Groups

This study examined how teachers shaped online education and what the experiences of teachers and students were by means of a focus groups held in the spring of 2021. The insights will contribute to knowledge of didactic strategies that are (potentially) effective for online (aspects of) education and to the further development of the UvA’s digitization vision. The study also includes a report of interviews with teachers and students about courses that are considered promising examples of online or blended education, therefore serving as inspiration for other teachers. These stories have been edited in teacher stories, stories that bring together the experiences of teachers and students with a good online practice example.
