Artificial Intelligence

Are you interested in using GPT4 to alleviate your work as an educator and share your findings, use AI within your teaching or for generating assessment cases or even assignments? Then this pilot is for you.

Experimenting with GPT in education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, like ChatGPT, could change higher education by making teaching and learning more personalized and efficient. By automating routine tasks, providing instant feedback, and fostering a more interactive and engaging learning environment, AI tools may not only enhance the educational experience for students, but also empower educators to focus on more complex and creative aspects of teaching.  Overall, AI could make education more adaptable and innovative. At the same time, privacy-related issues and ethical concerns make it difficult, if not impossible, to use ChatGPT for educational purposes at UvA.

The TLC-FMG is launching an exciting pilot project where teachers have the opportunity to try out the power of AI, exemplified by ChatGPT, within the GDPR-proof environment housed on our own servers.

Project goals

The goal of the project is for teachers and TLC FMG to explore the possibilities of generative AI in education and to use it in a wide range of teaching related tasks. Ranging from generating exam questions to  exploring new teaching methods, and everything in-between you can think of where AI could be useful in your work as a teacher.

We aim to gather data on the effectiveness, usability, and satisfaction of both students and faculty with GPT, providing insights into how AI technologies can be integrated into higher education to improve outcomes, efficiency, and engagement across the university community, as well as reduce work pressure for teachers and coordinators alike.

Procedure and eligibility criteria

We follow an official procedure that starts with an intake interview. The short-listed projects will be checked on legality, ethics, as well as information security and privacy before final approval. Keep in mind that it might not be possible for all the proposals to be accepted, based on the available budget, scope of the projects and ethical constraints.

To sign up for the pilot, please make sure that your proposal meets the following eligibility criteria:

  • Teaching: Your project is related to teaching tasks.
  • Start date of project: For the review committee to have adequate time to process the proposal, make sure that the starting date of the project you are proposing is either flexible or sufficiently in the future (i.e., not immediately after the submission).
  • Small scale: If your proposal includes actual student use of the GPT environment, note that the number of students who will need to be actively using it should be no higher than 30.
  • Evaluation: An important aspect of this pilot project is to learn from each other. Therefore, you should be willing to evaluate your project and share your experiences with TLC FMG, education directors, and the teaching community. We know this takes time and therefore we will compensate you with at least 10 hours, depending on the size of the project.
  • End date: The project must be concluded by the end of 2024.
