The TLC-FMG hosted a fun summer event on Tuesday July 9th 2024: GPTime Savers. We learned how to use AI to make our educational preparation time faster and easier with practical exercises. We had a small and friendly afternoon with drinks and snacks, exploring how AI can help us with lesson plans, assessment questions and presentations.
Our very own Chip Huisman kicked off the event and guided us through the program. With Sharon Klinkenberg setting the stage for AI use in education. Highlighting the key components of the upcoming GenAI policy framework for the UvA. With an emphasis on the selective use scenario, where teachers of the FMG can currently participate in pilots using the UvA GenAI environment.
In the main keynote, Ivana Bušljeta Banks, guided us through the different use cases in which GenAI can be helpful in crafting your course. We started off by looking at how a presentation outline can easily be created, with even some examples added on the specific topic of interest. By adding the bulleted outline to powerpoint, the presentation is just a click away. Lesson plans can easily be created as a starting point for you to work on. Or what about creating practice questions based on some course resources, it can be done with just some promting and providing GPT the content. Other use cases involved providing or reformulating feedback, writing emails, making summaries and revising texts.
Ivana tought us how to first create a persona in GPT with a prompt like:
“You are an expert in learning theory, specializing in retrieval practice. You are also an experienced university teacher of clinical psychology. Create a …”
As we learned, pre prompting can drastically improve the quality of the results. You can find the presentation on this page, so you can learn more about the possibilities of using GenAI in education.
You can try out the UvA Pilot environment by joining the TLC-FMG AI pilot project. Visit this page to learn how to sign up.
In the session focusgroups where formed to work on:
Tips for Using UvA AI Chat
Decide on a course and topic for your exams.
Use UvA AI Chat to generate two different versions of a multiple-choice exam. Ensure each version has:
Try out other types for questions (fill-in-the-blanks, short open answer, etc.) if you have time.
Decide on a course and topic for your PowerPoint lesson.
Use UvA AI Chat to generate the content for each slide, including (for example):
Copy/paste the AI generated content into PowerPoint and use the Designer function within PowerPoint to adjust the format of the designs to your liking (if you have time)
Decide on a course and topic for a 2-hour seminar/lecture for this course.
Use UvA AI Chat to generate the lesson plan, including (for example):
General takeaways from the breakout groups were to be as specific as possible on the persona, to give clear guidance for the level of output. Furthermore, it helps to include as much material on general procedures as possible. The participants were amazed by the impact of this AI-output, which interacts with study guides of a course as well. However, always be aware of checking the procedures and output for the AI pitfall of hallucinations. When you stay in charge, it can be a time saver in administration and function for ideas.
