Course details

The course consists of two sessions that focus on your own and other’s identity, course and lesson design and teaching behavior. In the first session you are invited to investigate your own perspectives and positions considering diversity. You are also challenged to inquire on other perspectives and positions. Following this, we discuss how this affects teaching and learning and how it translates to your own classroom. In the second meeting you will redesign a lesson, or a course using principles of inclusive pedagogy and give each other feedback. Also you will practice new teaching behavior. Using different methods, you will practice with navigating ‘hot moments’ and facilitating discussions on sensitive topics. Every meeting requires some preparation, mainly by reading relevant literature and selecting a case from your own teaching practice. Prior to the first meeting you are asked to fill in an intake form in which you formulate your expectations and learning needs for the course.

What do you gain from this course?

After taking this course participants are able to inquire their own perspectives on diversity in the classroom and investigate on new perspectives. Furthermore, they will be able to design a safe learning environment that promotes learning from different perspectives, using principles of different pedagogical methods that promote inclusivity. Participants will also be able to facilitate inclusive conversations on sensitive topics and turn ‘hot moments’ into moments of learning.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive a diploma or certificate upon completion of the course?

Upon completion of this course, you will not receive a diploma. After all, it is not a study programme you are completing. However, it is possible to receive a certificate of participation.

How much time am I expected to spend on this course outside of sessions?

Before the start of each course, we ask participants to fill in a form and send this to the trainer. This helps the trainer to obtain insight in to the learning goals and expectations of the participants. For participants, this a good way to prepare for asking the questions and discussing the topics that would benefit them most.

In addition, the majority of courses invite participants to bring in materials (such as a case study), or to prepare for sessions by watching/reading some online self-study materials. For a complete course, the total preparation time will be approximately 1 hour.

Courses that consist of more than one session, will often require some additional between-session work, in the form of an assignment. Assignments offer you the opportunity to put what you have learned into practice. How much time you spend on an assignment is largely up to you, although a reasonable estimate would be 1 hour for the entire course.
